Short chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds are known as peptides. They serve as the building blocks of proteins, which are crucial for most biological functions. When these chains extend and reach a molecular mass of 10,000 Da or more, they are generally classified as proteins. This sets them apart from steroids, which are ring-shaped fatty molecules.
